13 Read Aloud Books for Fall: Your Ultimate Guide for 2023

If you’re a fan of fall like me, maybe you’re looking for some new read aloud books that are perfect for this cozy season.

There’s not much more that I love than cozy days at home, snuggled under a blanket, and a captivating book to savor.

We all know that reading aloud is essential for children’s development, but sometimes finding seasonal books can be a challenge.

So, I wanted to share 13 read aloud books that you might also enjoy this fall… or really anytime!

Grab a warm cup of coffee and let’s dive in together.

1. The Fall Festival by Mercer Mayer

Follow along as Little Critter and his family visit the pumpkin patch. From picking out the perfect pumpkin, to picking apples and drinking cider, kids can learn all about what happens on a farm in the fall through this engaging story.

If you, like me, grew up following along with Little Critter’s adventures, then this is a must-read.

2. Scooby-Doo Fall Fright by Gail Herman

Scooby-Doo and his friends have been delighting children for decades with their mysteries and charades.

A scary storm, a ghost, and a monster all add a thrill to this fun mystery story that will have your kids coming back for more.

Growing up, I LOVED Scooby Doo, so this is an especially fun one to share with my own children.

3. Mouse’s First Fall by Lauren Thompson

Kids will be delighted by Mouse and Minka’s antics as they go out to explore on a cool day during their first fall.

The book covers fall colors and studies leaves of different shapes and sizes. Kids will learn what makes fall a special season and different from the others.

This is such a sweet little book!

4. Dragon’s Fall Fair by Mara Conlon

Dragon and his friends want to celebrate the coming of fall with a fun fall fair. The only problem is, they’ve never been to one and don’t know how to make one.

Come along as they come up with their own creative ways to have fun during the fall.

5. Fall Is for School by Robert Neubecker

Instill an excitement for school in your kids by reading this little treasure with them. A little girl is excited for school to start, but her older brother is complaining about the things he doesn’t like.

So she goes on and on about all the things there are to love about going to school. A few factoids are woven into the story, giving you a chance to learn something new, too.

Even if you are homeschooling your kids, the positive aspects of school are great associations for your kids to enjoy the fall season and going to school.

6. Fall Is for Friends by Suzy Spafford

Inspire your child’s creativity with the antics of two friends, Suzy and Emily. This is such a sweet read aloud book and one you could actually share with friends, if you wanted to throw a fall-themed back to school party!

They can’t wait for the leaves to fall and begin trying all sorts of things from cheerleading to singing to encourage the leaves to let go and flutter down to the ground so they can play with them.

7. This First Thanksgiving Day by Laura Krauss Melmed

Learn about the origins of Thanksgiving by delving through the vibrant illustrations and rollicking verse of this colorful story.

As a bonus, kids can practice counting and sharpen their visual skills looking for the correct number of animals that are hidden in the pictures on each page.

8. Pooh’s Fall Harvest by Isabel Gaines

Winnie the Pooh is at it again, delighting a whole new generation of children! My boys are nearly in the upper elementary grades and still adore Pooh.

This story is perfect for kids who are just beginning to read by themselves as the language is simple enough for them to follow along and start recognizing or sounding out words by themselves.

9. Pooh’s Halloween Parade by Isabel Gaines

While you’re visiting the Hundred Acre Wood, you might want to check out Pooh’s Halloween Parade.

However, before the festivities can begin, they must discover what’s up with the scary, noisy rock in the back of the room.

10. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves! by Lucille Colandro

Settle in for a funny, silly time with your little one as the little old lady who swallows everything starts in on fall-themed items.

At the end of the story, the items she swallows become a fall item (a scarecrow) and kids have a great time trying to figure out what it’s going to be as the story progresses.

11. The Spooky Wheels on the Bus by J. Elizabeth Mills

You probably sing the wheels on the bus with your child. Now you can turn it into a Halloween journey.

Count up from one spooky bus to ten goofy ghosts with your little scholar as the bus goes on a crazy ride, picking up unexpected passengers along the way.

12. Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson

A witch and her cat are out for a night flight on her broom when a strong gust of wind runs off with various items including her hat.

Helpful animals find them, but want a ride on the broom in exchange for helping out. Will there be enough room for all of them?

13. Ten Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O’Connell

This read aloud book gives you another chance to work on counting with your little one.

One-by-one ten ghosts are scared away from their home by a witch who has moved in and is determined to roust them out with silly costumes and strange props.

Once all the ghosts have been chased out, they get together and hatch a plan to get their house back.

This cute little read aloud book is a fun way to practice a wide variety of skills!
